Just wanted to give you a bit of my Civil War Medical knowledge:

After an amputation, it was standard procedure, if the patient did not revive by conventional methods, to pour a small amount of chlorofom on his testicles to rouse him.

Chloroform, by the way, was a coolant on the skin. It was also used to put people to sleep. ;)
